When water is spreading or a toilet will not drain, comparing plumbers can feel like one more problem you do not have time for. We still believe six questions are worth asking. They are the same checks we would make before letting someone work on our own property: who is responsible, what has actually been assessed, and what are we authorising?
The Northern Beaches Plumber is operated by Antons Enterprises Pty Ltd under NSW contractor licence 210933C. This is how we think a clear plumbing booking should work.
1. Whose licence covers the work?
Ask for the legal contractor name and licence number, not only a trading name. Plumbing, draining and gasfitting are regulated in NSW, and the licence should match the type of work being offered. Service NSW provides an official builder and tradesperson licence check searchable by licence number, name, business or location.
We would confirm:
- the business or contractor name;
- the licence number and relevant category;
- who will attend;
- a working contact number; and
- whether the property is inside current service coverage.
Gas work deserves an extra check. NSW Fair Trading explains licensing and certificate requirements in its guidance on using a gasfitter.
2. What has been assessed—and what has not?
We are cautious when a complex concealed fault receives a definite diagnosis before inspection. Photos and a good phone description help us prepare, but they do not reveal every buried pipe, damaged joint or internal component.
A plumber should be able to separate observed facts from a working theory. Ask what evidence supports the recommendation, what remains uncertain and whether another inspection step could change the scope.
3. What exactly am I authorising?
A useful scope names the work rather than hiding behind “fix plumbing”. We want customers to know whether they are approving investigation, clearing, repair, replacement or a combination.
Ask these questions before work expands:
- Are parts and equipment included?
- Is access, excavation or making good included?
- Could another trade or strata approval be required?
- How will additional work be explained and approved?
- What will be tested when the work is complete?
The cheapest headline figure is not useful when it leaves the essential part of the job undefined.
4. Does the plumber’s experience match the fault?
Different symptoms call for different assessment habits. A recurring drain backup may need controlled clearing followed by inspection. A hot-water fault requires the unit, valves, connections and energy source to be considered together. A hidden leak needs evidence before surfaces are opened.
Our service overview helps customers choose the right starting point. It links directly to blocked drain clearing, hot-water assessment and general plumbing repairs.
5. Has anyone asked about the property?
Access is part of the work. In Manly and Dee Why, apartment jobs may involve a strata contact, loading restrictions, basement parking and shared services. On a larger Mona Vale property, the affected building or outside access point may sit well away from the driveway.
When we book a job, we ask about stairs, gates, pets, parking, tenancy arrangements and who can approve access. Those questions help us plan honestly instead of discovering preventable obstacles at the door.
6. How will the result be explained?
After an assessment or repair, you should know what was found, what work was completed and whether any limitation or follow-up remains. Ask what testing applies and which product or workmanship warranties cover the agreed work. A confident answer should be specific enough to understand without promising an outcome the plumber cannot guarantee.
What we believe a good booking feels like
You should know the licensed business behind the work, the purpose of the visit and how decisions will be made if the scope changes. Clear does not mean complicated. It means you can repeat back what happens next.
